Mauao ("The Mount")

If you like walking or jogging, then we can highly recommend Mauao's 3.4km base track where you can enjoy the scenic route and all the best native trees and wildlife that NZ has to offer. If you're feeling extra energetic then there are a couple of tracks to choose from, UP the Mount!

At the base of the Mount are the Hot Salt Water Pools where you can sit back, relax and take in the marvelous views. Heaven!

Mayor Tuhua Island

Tuhua (Mayor Island) Marine Reserve, north of Tauranga, was established in January 1993 to protect marine organisms and their habitats for present and future generations. Landing on the island itself is by permission of the owners (Tuhua Trust Board) only and requires adherence to biosecurity protocols. Several charter companies run trips to the island. Walking tracks around the island provide access to points of interest.

Tauranga attractions and activities

You are staying in a luxury hotel in Tauranga which boasts one of the largest natural harbours in New Zealand and has a wonderful shopping centre. There are various fishing and diving charters to hire and a trip to swim with the dolphins is a must. An experience to remember for the rest of your life!

At Tauranga airport there are heaps of fun things to do.  Take the original and authentic M*A*S*H helicopter on a fantastic ride, take airplane rides and lessons if you wish, glider flights, the list is endless here and check-out the fabulous "Classic Flyers" cafe and museum.

Tauranga also has an art gallery, cinemas, bowling alley, Indoor Climbing Gym and Glo Golf Complex, historical village and plenty more indoor activities so whatever the weather there's plenty to do!!

McLaren Falls Park

About 15 minutes drive south of Tauranga is McLaren Falls Park which has a beautiful landscape with parkland and native bush. McLaren Falls has a fine botanical collection of trees and a range of birdlife, including the North Island brown kiwi, North Island robin and long-tailed cuckoo.

Adjacent to the park is Marshalls Animal Park, which is family run, has a collection of wonderful animals and the views are sensational from the top.

Papamoa attractions & activities

Around 10 to 15 minute's drive away, Papamoa offers miles of white, sandy beaches and also the Papamoa Hills which are a sight to behold. There is also the world's number one land-based sail sport at Blokart Heaven which is a fun sport for all ages. There are two shopping centres both offering all you would need.

A little further on, in Te Puke is Kiwi 360, the kiwifruit capital of the world, a great place to visit and find out everything you ever wanted to know about kiwifruit and much, much more! Aerius helicopter rides are also situated here where you can experience exclusive river or sea helifishing and hunting tours and see the diversity of landscape that the Bay of Plenty region has to offer. Nearby, is the town of Maketu which offers great horse trekking.

Things to do in Whakatane

Approximately one hour's drive away is Whakatane (an attractive coastal town situated on the banks of the Whakatane River) and is well worth a visit as it is the main base for taking trips out to White Island, one of the world's few accessible active volcanoes (49km off the coast). We recommend seeing the Island up close (by boat or helicopter) - it will be an experience you will never forget.
